Drayton Plains Nature Center

A Non-Profit Organization

The Nature Center is born…

Where the Clinton River cuts a double channel as it meanders under Hatchery Road toward Lake St. Clair, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) established an 82-acre fish hatchery in 1904.  When the project was slated for abandonment in 1962, a group of concerned citizens purchased the property for the purpose of protecting the habitat and all living things.

In 1967, the Drayton Plains Nature Center opened it’s doors as a privately owned, non-profit Center dedicated to be enjoyed by it’s neighbors and friends.  Later, 55 adjoining acres were added to bring the DPNC to it’s current size of 137-acres.

Today, the MDNR again uses the ponds to rear walleye, northern pike, and other fish for their lake and stream restocking program.  The former hatchery building has been converted to a ‘hands-on’ Interpretive Center, meeting area, and classroom.
